DEADPOOL blew away the competition at the box office this weekend, earning $135 million (Friday-Sunday) and is on track to make up to $150 million after the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday. Early studio estimates had the film grossing no more than $65 million, so this has to be a pleasant surprise for 20th Century Fox, producers, director Tim Miller and cast/crew.
Deadpool is now the biggest opening for an R-rated film EVER, including the biggest opener for the month of February, beating last year’s Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s also a huge achievement for star Ryan Reynolds, making this his largest opener in his entire career thus far.
In foreign markets, the film has grossed more than $125 million, bringing its worldwide total to an amazing $260 million.
With a budget of just $58 million, Deadpool has already been given the greenlight for a sequel.
Congrats to all involved!
