X-Men producer Simon Kinberg<\/strong> recently had a chat with Flickering Myth<\/a> about the status of Channing Tatum’s developing GAMBIT<\/a> solo picture. After original director Rupert Wyatt bowed out, production was set to film in New Orleans this June with new director Doug Liman. But Kinberg confirms that filming (and the film’s release date) have been pushed back indefinitely.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get the script right,\u201d admitted Kinberg. \u201cWe just didn\u2019t get the script to the place where we all thought the movie deserved. So we\u2019re still working on the script. We\u2019re very close, actually, to being done with the script. And the hope is that Channing has a couple of movies he has to shoot, but that we would shoot at the end of this year, or the beginning of next year.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s looking really good. I\u2019m not going to say anything about it content-wise. I think one of the things that I\u2019ve learnt on all these movies \u2013 and maybe the lesson was best learned for me on Deadpool \u2013 is the most important thing is getting the tone and the voice right. That the storytelling, the actual narrative, the plots are sort of interchangeable and disposable, ultimately.\u201d<\/p>\n On getting the tone and voice of Gambit right, he says \u201cIf I ask you what your favorite movies are, you\u2019re not going to tell me about the plot. You\u2019re going to tell me you love this character. And so what we\u2019ve really tried to do with Gambit is make sure that we get the voice of that character right and the tone of the comics 100% on the page. It\u2019s a very unique tone. It\u2019s unique from Deadpool, it\u2019s unique from the X-Men. It\u2019s a heist movie that we\u2019ve never done in these kinds of films before. He\u2019s a con-man. And so that\u2019s really where we\u2019ve spent our time.\u201d<\/p>\n Kinberg assures that when Gambit makes his way to the big screen, it’ll (with all intent) be done the right way.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was a moment when we were going to shoot the movie at the beginning of this year, and then we felt like it just wasn\u2019t ready.
