20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Stacey Snider<\/strong> recently had an interesting chat with Variety<\/a>, where she touches on how the studio plans on keeping the X-Men film universe fresh and diverse.<\/p>\n “The ‘X-Men’ is a franchise we intend to vigorously mine,” she says, “but with an eye toward great variety.” Snider notes how films like DEADPOOL<\/a> and LOGAN<\/a> were “part of a cinematice universe, but felt unique.”<\/p>\n As reported earlier, screeners for ‘Logan’ were some of the first to be sent to Academy Award members; a sign a surefire confidence. She definitely feels that James Mangold’s film deserves Oscar recognition. “The way it combines classic storytelling with superhero lore is brilliant.” When asked if they plan on ever recasting Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, she says “Anything’s possible.”<\/p>\n Moving on to the most exciting quote in her interview, Snider describes how they intend to stand out from the big crop of superhero films, giving great insight into what they’re planning for director Josh Boone’s NEW MUTANTS<\/a>, which wrapped production in Boston last week.<\/p>\n “If we\u2019re going to make a superhero movie, we have to ask ourselves: ‘What\u2019s our version? What\u2019s a Fox Marvel film? When you look at films like ‘Deadpool’ or ‘Logan’ or the upcoming ‘New Mutants,’ you\u2019ll see they have their own personality. Great effort has been put into making sure they\u2019re differentiated. ‘New Mutants’ is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It\u2019s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they\u2019re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a ‘Breakfast Club’ detention\/’Cuckoo\u2019s Nest’ institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it\u2019s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven\u2019t seen a superhero movie whose genre is more like ‘The Shining’ than ‘we\u2019re teenagers let\u2019s save the world.'”<\/p>\n Now that sounds different!<\/em><\/p>\n
