Holy…
I just returned from a preview here in Germany. Be ready for a ride. The film worked much better than I anticipated it to work.
I will keep this as spoilerfree as possible:
The Good:
– Sentinels! I have never been a fan of them, but they nailed them. I haven’t seen such an impressive adversary since T2 in 1991 when the world met T1000. The future Sentinels are unstoppable. They are like a force of nature.
– The 4 protagonists. Everyone who fears this will be another Wolverine and the X-Men movie… relax. Yes… Logan has an important part, but not as important as you think. The core story really is about Charles – Erik – and Raven. The center focus of the film is the latest of the three. Wolverine acts as a commentator of some sort.
– Quicksilver: His scenes got the best reaction from the audience. People went crazy for him. I really hope Singer will extended his part in the 2016 sequel. AVENGERS 2 will have a tough time to sell another version to this one!
– The cinematography: Beyond awesome. If you thought AVENGERS was big, go watch X-DOFP. It made everything right, AVENGERS did wrong. Instead of having people in one and the same place talking about things (Helicarier), the X-Men go out (Vietnam, Paris, New York, Washington, China, Russia) and DO things while they talk about it.
The Meh:
– The score. Pretty much a rehash of Ottman’s X2 score, which in my opinion is the most generic one of the series. The best scores were LAST STAND, ORIGINS WOLVERINE, FIRST CLASS and THE WOLVERINE. There is not a single theme I have in mind from DOFP now, whereas I have the main titles from all the other films in my head.
– 132 minutes? Come on… this could have gone for another 2 hours. If you thought LAST STAND was fast paced… go watch DOFP.
The Bad:
– Nothing… really. Some cheesy dialogue at the beginning maybe to set up the film itself. But else… this is a great film, not quite the best in the series (that’s THE WOLVERINE imho), but pretty much close upstairs the ladder.
Sit through the credits… and I mean… the complete credits! Really… it’s worth it… You thought Thanos was cool? Well… this one just beats him.
The four horsemen really made that final shot for me. Nice attention to detail.
