Ryan Reynolds says DEADPOOL will be a film that is culturally relevant and filled with plenty of easter eggs for fans and noobs alike. “It’s a character that knows he’s in a comic book,” he tells MTV. “He’s not only incredibly pop culture relevant, but savvy. To me it feels like we’re making not just a comic book movie, but a historical record that can capture the zeitgeist as it is right now in film.”
On referencing the comics on screen, “There’s lots of stuff in there that people are going to love and get,” he continues. “And then there’s lots of things in there that, maybe [for] some of the audience that’s not initiated to Deadpool, might go over their head.”
Many are wondering if “the merc” will crossover with future X-Men films, especially considering characters like Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead are in the mix. “That’s a damn good question,” he says to Screen Rant. “You tell me. It would be kind of hard, wouldn’t it? Because you have a character – let’s say you have a character who knows he’s in a comic book movie, that sort of breaks the fourth wall [and] has a tendency to kind of say people’s real names instead of their characters’ names. How do you introduce that into another universe that…does not do that? So…I don’t know. I’d be curious to say. I’m not saying that’s not going to happen. I don’t know if it’s going to happen. I would love to see that.
“You have to be very careful about how you do that because you don’t want to do a disservice to any one of these characters that are beloved by everyone.”
The film comes to theaters on February 12, 2016.
