LRM is posting a rumor that the next mainline X-MEN film may possibly involve the iconic Dark Phoenix storyline, saying it could be the “central focus of the movie.” We last saw Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey unleash her growing power in APOCALYPSE, so it isn’t a stretch that writer Simon Kinberg would be interested in further exploring that aspect of the character.
Famke Janssen’s original iteration of Phoenix in THE LAST STAND was portrayed simply as the alter-ego/second mutation of Grey. It’s possible this new version could stick closer to the comics and go cosmic, introducing the true Phoenix force along with important characters like the Shi’ar.
Longtime producer and director Bryan Singer previously told Fandango “…another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenet within the X-Men universe that hasn’t been explored. And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilize that would be exciting, visually.”
There’s no reason (right now) to believe that Singer will return in the director’s chair, as he’s reportedly focusing on other projects, but it shows that producers are at least thinking about the idea. Going cosmic would open up many possibilities for the franchise, with opportunities for new characters and spin-offs.
We’ll have to wait and see if this rumor turns out to be true!
