X-MEN: NEW MUTANTS finds its Dani Moonstar in newcomer Blu Hunt.

After an exhaustive international search, The Hollywood Reporterconfirms a report by Omega Underground that relative newcomer Blu Hunt has been cast as Dani Moonstar in Josh Boone’s upcoming NEW MUTANTS spinoff based in the growing X-MEN cinematic universe.

Producers and 20th Century Fox held casting searches in the US, Canada and UK. Casting this role was important, as they wanted to find an actress that was ethnically appropriate (Hunt has Native American ancestry).

Moonstar can produce lifelike mental illusions, tapping into a person’s fears or desires. She plays a pivotal role, as the film’s antagonist Demon Bear shares a deep connections to her family.

Hunt joins Anya Taylor-Joy as the dimension-hopping sorceress Magik, Maisie Williams as the transforming Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as the fiery Sunspot, Charlie Heaton as the self-propelling Cannonball and Rosario Dawson as their potential mutant mentor, Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

Described as a horror film in the X-Men franchise, the plot involves five young mutants who are being held in a secret facility against their will, having to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.

Filming begins this July in Boston for a April 13, 2018 theatrical release.
