Legendary writer Grant Morrison revealed to Popverse that he pitched a WARLOCK movie more than a decade ago. “At Marvel I pitched a good Dr. Strange, and I did Moon Knight, Morbius, Warlock – the X-Men alien robot one – and Terror Inc. among others,” they said. “My published work is the tip of a vast iceberg of written material that will never be seen!”
In the comics, Warlock is a Technarchy, a race of mechanical organisms that survive by infecting living creatures with the “techno-organic” transmode virus, before draining the life energy of the infected organism. Unlike others of his race, Warlock possesses a distinctive degree of compassion, and as a result was dubbed a mutant of his race. [Wiki]
We don’t know the exact reason why that pitch didn’t develop into anything, but 20th Century Fox did own the character rights at the time. It’s also possible they shared said rights with Marvel Studios, as with several X-Men adjacent characters like Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and the Skrulls.
Warlock can’t catch a break! The character was originally planned to appear in director Josh Boone’s THE NEW MUTANTS (2020) as a member of the team, but was removed due to budget and time constraints. Production then planned to tease him in reshoots with Sacha Baron Cohen potentially voicing him, but that filming never took place due to Disney acquiring Fox and the X-Men characters.
