This article contain minor plot spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World.
Adamantium, one of the most iconic metals (besides Vibranium) in Marvel Comics, has finally made its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Captain America: Brave New World. This development is not just a nod to comic book fans, it serves as an important first step toward the introduction of Wolverine.
First appearing in Avengers #66 (1963), Adamantium was introduced as an extremely durable metal. It was originally associated with Ultron, but became most famous for being bonded to Wolverine’s skeleton as part of the Weapon X program. This painful process made Logan – a mutant with healing powers – nearly indestructible.
In the MCU, Adamantium is discovered within the remains of the Celestial Tiamut, who was turned to stone at the end of Eternals by Sersi. This new resource cataches the attention of global leaders, who compete for control over it.
President Ross calls it “the discovery of the millennium,” highlighting its importance as a game-changing resource. Unlike Vibranium, which has been “exclusive” to Wakanda, Adamantium is a metal that different world powers are now racing to obtain. This sets the stage for worldwide conflicts and secret government projects like Weapon X.
Adamantium’s introduction is laying the groundwork for Wolverine’s future. Although Brave New World does not feature him directly, it establishes a critical piece of his backstory: the emmergence of Adamantium for experiments. The discovery of the metal will eventually lead to its use in the initiative responsible for bonding it to Wolverine’s skeleton.
Now that Adamantium exists, it’s expected to become a highly sought-after resource, potentially leading to its use in future conflicts, weapons programs, and, of course, the introduction of mutants. This could play a big role in upcoming Marvel projects before finally landing on the arrival of this universe’s Wolverine, whether it’s Hugh Jackman or another actor.
Now playing in theaters, Captain America: Brave New World is not just another superhero film—it’s a turning point in MCU history. By introducing Adamantium, Marvel is laying the groundwork for one of its most beloved characters, Wolverine, and setting the stage for the long-awaited arrival of the X-Men.
In related news, Grace Randolph released her spoiler breakdown video, which includes some Adamantium/Wolverine talk.
