Deadline reports that Marvel Studios is reportedly in early discussions with Jake Schreier, the director behind the recently released Thunderbolts, to helm a new X-Men movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This development follows the critical success of Thunderbolts, which has already grossed $173 million globally.
Schreier’s involvement in the MCU began with Thunderbolts, a film that introduced a team of antiheroes, including characters like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and Red Guardian (David Harbour). The film is being praised for its unique approach, blending dark humor with emotional depth.
The success of Thunderbolts has led Marvel Studios to consider Schreier for their developing X-Men project. Michael Lesslie, known for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Assassin’s Creed, is writing the screenplay, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige producing.
Marvel Studios has been gradually introducing mutants into the MCU through subtle hints in shows and cameo appearances by former X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer. The momentum continues with Avengers: Doomsday, which will feature returning X-Men actors like James Marsden, Ian McKellen and Rebecca Romijn, capitalizing on the 2000s X-Men era. While casting details for the new X-Men team remain under wraps, Marvel is expected to introduce fresh faces to the franchise – whether as new characters are rebooted versions is anyone’s guess.
As of now, X-Men is in the early stages, and no official announcements have been made regarding casting or release timeline. Rumoirs point to a 2027 debut just after Avengers: Secret Wars. However, Schreier’s successful track record with Thunderbolts has positioned him as a strong candidate to lead the next chapter in the X-Men saga within the MCU.
