Nicholas Hoult, like many Marvel enthusiasts, caught the buzz surrounding March’s Avengers: Doomsday livestream event, which introduced several returning cast members from the earlier X-Men films. One name in particular stood out to him: Kelsey Grammer, the only other actor to portray Beast (outside of a cameo) in live action.
“Kelsey did a fantastic job as Beast,” Hoult told Entertainment Weekly when reflecting on the announcement. “He was the version I grew up watching, along with the rest of that original cast – Patrick, Ian, James, all of them.”
Grammer is set to reprise his role alongside fellow X-Men veterans Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, who are all returning for Avengers: Doomsday, reconnecting with fans of the earlier Fox-led mutant films.
“These were the characters I remember seeing in the X-Men movies as a kid,” Hoult added. “I’m genuinely curious to see how they’re brought into the story. It should be really fun to watch.”
Grammer first took on the role of Hank McCoy aka Beast in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Hoult later stepped into the role as a younger version of the character starting with X-Men: First Class in 2011. The two versions of Beast even shared the same movie in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), appearing in different timelines with Hoult in the past, and Grammer as a cameo in the future.
Currently taking on the role of Lex Luthor in DC Studios’ Superman, Hoult confirmed he hasn’t had any discussions with Marvel about returning as Beast: “No,” he said plainly when asked.
