Broadway star, two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, and Doctor Who actress Jinkx Monsoon is already imagining her dream role for Marvel’s inevitable X-Men reboot. And her pick is an inspired choice.

During a recent appearance on Jesse David Fox’s Good One podcast, Monsoon asked, “Can I manifest something?” before diving into the character she’d love to play. “Marvel now has regained the rights to the X-Men. I think it would be a really cool idea to have a trans woman be Mystique.”

Monsoon went on to explain why Mystique has always been her personal favorite. “She’s my favorite Marvel character of all time, and I relate to her so much. I think a lot of trans people do. Think about how nice it would be: To be able to just blend in and not have everyone pay attention to us if we don’t want.”

The actress also touched on the deeper themes within Mystique’s story that resonate with the trans community. “We also relate to the fact that like she’s not accepted in her original form. So she has to transition to even walk around people,” Monsoon noted.

Clearly, she’s serious about the idea. “I texted my agent and I was like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on there, but please start dropping my name,’” she revealed with a laugh.

With the MCU preparing to bring the next iteration of mutants into the fold with director Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), it remains to be seen who will ultimately portray Mystique. Rebecca Romijn will reprise her iconic role in Avengers: Doomsday, although there’s an assumption that Marvel will reboot the property shortly after. One thing’s for sure, Monsoon’s passion for the role, combined with her unique perspective, makes her vision one worth considering.
