The X-Men universe got a nostalgic jolt at this year’s New York Comic Con, as Days of Future Past co-stars James McAvoy (Professor X) and Elliot Page (Kitty Pryde) reunited for a special panel celebrating the beloved film.
The two actors shared memories from their time working on the X-Men franchise, with Page reflecting on being part of the original trilogy and McAvoy repping the next generation of mutants from the First Class era. Attendees were treated to behind-the-scenes talk, and mutual admiration between the two stars.
McAvoy shared his thoughts on fans of the series, mentioning that some share how “they had a tough time at some point [in their lives] and [the films] really helped. Because I think one of the creeds or themes is, whether you’re disenfranchised or whether you’re depressed, or whether you are segregated or ghettoized or whatever you are, as so many of the characters in X-Men are, you are enough and you deserve your place.”
When asked about rumors that Emmy-winner Colman Domingo might be in the running to play Professor X along with Bella Ramsey for Kitty Pryde in the MCU, both gave their enthusiastic stamp of approval: “Sounds amazing! Look, I’m excited to see what happens next. I was a fan before I was an employee, and I’ll be a fan again,” said McAvoy.
“I don’t really follow [casting rumors], but they sound fantastic,” said Page. “I mean, it’d be just so exciting to see people do a take on a new iteration.”
As for the never-ending recasting buzz, McAvoy couldn’t resist a joke at Hugh Jackman’s expense. “When A.I. has taken over and playing all the roles, and there are no actors anymore, he will still be playing Wolverine,” he laughed. “Even A.I. will be like, ‘Nah, he got it! Nah!’”
It was a heartwarming and hilarious reunion that reminded fans why the X-Men films, and their stars, continue to hold such a powerful place in minds of many.
