Channing Tatum is getting ready to bring more Louisiana flavor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but finding just the right amount has been a creative challenge. The 45-year-old actor admitted to People that mastering Gambit’s signature Cajun accent required constant fine-tuning on set for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.
“It’s always an interesting negotiation,” Tatum explained about adopting the Louisiana dialect that defines his fan-favorite mutant.
Having spent time in the heart of Cajun country, he says there’s an incredible range to the way people speak there. “When you go down to Lafayette where most of the Cajuns are and Cajun culture, there’s a huge spectrum of Cajun. It’s massive,” he said.
That meant Tatum had to make choices scene by scene, balancing authenticity with clarity. “And so I have to interpret what I need to get across in the scene,” he continued. “And I got to make sure that, ‘Is this line for a joke and can I really Cajun this one up? Or is this line for plot and do I need to be really clear but still in a Cajun accent?’”
According to the actor, the process is “always a bit of a push and pull.”
Tatum first portrayed the card-throwing mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine, which had a different tone. Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, strikes a different balance. The film is “definitely going to be a dramatic movie,” Tatum noted, though he acknowledged that “the Russos love their comedy and that’s always going to be in there as well.”
The actor also teases that audiences should brace for an enormous spectacle when the movie arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026. According to him, the “sheer scale” of the Russos’ next Marvel installment will leave audiences stunned. “I think that they really set themselves up for a really hard bar to hit.
“Every single movie that they make is the next one has to top it,” Tatum added. “When I read the script, I was just like, ‘What?!’ I don’t think anybody’s really going to understand how they did this. It’s going to melt everybody’s brain all over again.”
