With Avengers: Doomsday deep in post-production and Marvel fans speculating about every possible cameo, one name that constantly resurfaces is Famke Janssen, the actress who originally brought Jean Grey to life in Fox’s X-Men franchise. Now, Janssen is speaking out (again) about whether she’ll appear in Marvel Studios’ upcoming multiverse epic, and her comments make her stance clearer than ever.
In a new interview with Variety, Janssen addressed ongoing fan theories insisting she might show up in the film. She pushed back on the speculation with a pointed, yet good-natured, remark:
“And then when I say that, people don’t believe me. So I’m just gonna wait for the movie to come out and, you know, people can see for themselves.”
While she didn’t confirm any involvement, she didn’t sound frustrated. Instead, Janssen used the moment to reflect on her long career and her evolving creative interests.
Janssen emphasized that she hasn’t closed the door on returning as Jean Grey entirely. But she also explained that such a return would depend heavily on timing and circumstances.
“I’m always open to anything. I’m very open minded, and I love my career and the trajectory that it’s taken over time… It depends on the timing. It’s just a hypothetical question, because I don’t know that they would ever bring back my Jean Grey. At that point I would take a look at it.”
She went on to highlight that her professional life has expanded beyond acting. From producing to directing to costume designing, Janssen has been carving out a multi-hyphenate identity that gives her more creative freedom than a short cameo could offer.
“My life is now enriched in all these areas, so it’s really hard to go back to something where I’m just asked to come in and say a few lines.”
Perhaps the most definitive answer she gave was about the future of Jean Grey in the MCU. According to Janssen, she’s not only at peace with someone else taking up the mantle, she’s eager to see who it will be.
“No. I’m excited to see who they’re getting next. I mean, Sophie Turner was amazing, and I’m sure the next person will be too. They’ve been so good at casting incredible actors and no one needs any tips from me. I’m looking forward to seeing who they cast.”
For now, Janssen seems more focused on building her career behind the scenes than returning to the superhero spotlight. But like any seasoned performer in today’s multiverse-driven Hollywood, she’s leaving room for the unexpected.
