As Marvel Studios prepares to fully reintroduce the X-Men into the MCU, one intriguing possibility is how Mystique could evolve on screen, while still honoring her cinematic legacy. Along with the inevitable recast post-Secret Wars, the MCU has a unique opportunity to embrace Mystique’s very nature as a shapeshifter by keeping Rebecca Romijn involved alongside a brand-new actor portraying the character’s primary form.
Mystique isn’t defined by a single face, and the films have already laid the groundwork for this idea. Rebecca Romijn memorably appeared without makeup in X2: X-Men United as “Grace,” a subtle but effective reminder that Mystique seamlessly blends into the human world. She later returned in X-Men: First Class with a brief but clever cameo as another human guise, reinforcing that Mystique can look like anyone at any time. The MCU could build on this concept by allowing Romijn to continue appearing as one of Mystique’s established human identities, an in-universe explanation that feels organic to the character rather than nostalgic fan service.
This approach also opens the door for Jennifer Lawrence to reappear in a similar capacity. While a new actor would headline Mystique’s core role in the reboot, Romijn and Lawrence could rotate in as familiar human forms Mystique adopts throughout the story. It’s a clever way to acknowledge multiple eras of X-Men films while reinforcing Mystique’s unpredictability and longevity. For longtime fans, it’s a rewarding nod; for new audiences, it simply deepens the character’s mystique.
By leaning into Mystique’s shapeshifting mythology, Marvel Studios can move the franchise forward without erasing its past. Keeping Romijn (and potentially Lawrence) in the mix could be a fun, story-driven way to bridge generations of X-Men storytelling, while giving Mystique one of the most inventive reinventions in the MCU’s growing mutant saga.
