Work on X-Men: First Class sequel is underway; Simon Kinberg attached to write screenplay.

Simon Kinberg has begun work on the screenplay for an upcoming sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, according to Superhero Hype! Kinberg is no stranger to the X-Men universe, having produced ‘First Class’ and co-written X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. No word yet if Vaughn and producer/ storymaker Bryan Singer are involved, though one would hope that 20th Century Fox would want to keep their successful formula intact.

Actor Jason Flemyng (Azazel) recently told Digital Spy “There was a benchmark that [the first film] had to hit box office-wise before they could start writing the next one, which they’ve started.” Fox wanted at least $350 million in worldwide box office to merit a sequel. The film brought in $356 million.

A sequel could make its way to theaters by 2014.
