DC Studios has officially released the first teaser trailer for Lanterns, giving a first real look at the upcoming series set to air on HBO and stream on HBO Max this August. The footage presents a noticeably grounded take on the Green Lantern mythology, trading bright cosmic spectacle for Earthy landscapes, tense conversations, and a slow-burn sense of mystery surrounding the series. Rather than diving headfirst into alien worlds and interstellar warfare, the teaser frames the story more like a character-driven crime drama unfolding in the American heartland.

That grounded approach has already sparked comparisons online, with some describing the vibe as what you’d get if Yellowstone had a baby with a superhero IP. The tone feels gritty, restrained, leaning into atmosphere over visual effects. At the same time, it’s worth remembering that this is only a teaser. There’s every possibility that the more fantastical elements of the Green Lantern comics, which include alien civilizations and cosmic entities, are being intentionally held back for later reveals. If so, DC may be saving its biggest surprises for a full trailer or the series itself.

Either way, Lanterns looks ready to carve out a unique identity within the evolving DC Universe. By emphasizing grounded storytelling first, the series could make the eventual cosmic elements feel even more impactful when they arrive. If the teaser is any indication, this August’s premiere on HBO and HBO Max could mark a bold and refreshingly different chapter for the Green Lantern legacy.
