DC Studios co-head and Superman filmmaker James Gunn has unveiled a new behind-the-scenes image from Superman: Man of Tomorrow, giving us a first look at Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in battle armor.

The photo, which Gunn shared on social media with the simple caption “Fit check. Live from the set of Man of Tomorrow,” shows Hoult wearing a heavily armored suit that’s clearly Lex Luthor’s iconic warsuit from the comics. The armor will give the billionaire mastermind a more formidable physical presence when he eventually confronts super-powered threats in the upcoming sequel.
Interestingly, Gunn has previously hinted that the relationship between Superman and Lex Luthor will be more complicated than a simple hero-versus-villain conflict. The director previously hinted at the two characters being forced to cooperate against a common enemy.
That danger will be Brainiac, who will be portrayed in live action by Lars Eidinger. The classic Superman villain may become the catalyst for an uneasy alliance between Clark Kent and his longtime rival.
Scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, Man of Tomorrow will continue the story of the DC Universe following Gunn’s Superman. Alongside David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Lars Eidinger, the cast includes Aaron Pierre, Adria Arjona, and Milly Alcock. Matthew Lillard and Andre Royo are also part of the ensemble in roles that have not yet been disclosed.
