Joe and Anthony Russo are once again stepping into the Marvel spotlight as they prepare to bring Avengers: Doomsday to theaters this December 18. The filmmakers recently spoke with Fandango about Marvel Studios’ upcoming event film, giving a few new details while remaining careful not to reveal too much about what audiences can expect.

One of the biggest details to emerge from the conversation is the film’s approximate runtime. Anthony Russo revealed that Avengers: Doomsday is currently expected to run around two and a half hours. “It’s a two-and-a-half-hour movie, or so,” Russo said. While the wording suggests the final runtime could still change slightly, the figure gives fans an idea of the scale of the next Avengers installment.

The Russos also discussed the experience of working with members of the X-Men cast, marking a major moment in the Marvel Studios universe as characters from the former Fox X-Men films appear alongside the Avengers. This includes Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

“To be able to work with those actors is like a dream come true for us,” Anthony Russo said. He continued, “We never imagined the day that [Avengers and X-Men] could find their way back to one another [after separation of movie studios]. So, the fact that we can sort of be the facilitators of that and activate that through this movie… we have to pinch ourselves.”

That crossover represents one of the most significant elements of Doomsday, bringing together characters and performers from different eras of Marvel’s cinematic history.

Of course, the Russos aren’t giving away how everything comes together. Anthony Russo offered another tease when discussing the movie’s conclusion. “I think people are going to be surprised,” he said. “It’s a very surprising ending. It’s a very surprising movie, and that’s all we’ll say about it.”
