Rewatching the first official trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) brings back the eXcitement surrounding one of the most ambitious entries in the X-Men franchise. The trailer introduced audiences to a story that would connect the original X-Men films with the younger cast from X-Men: First Class. This epic crossover immediately made the film feel like a major event for longtime fans.
The story takes place across two different time periods. In a bleak future, mutant-hunting Sentinels have nearly wiped out the mutant population and threaten humanity as well. The remaining X-Men decide that their best chance is to send Wolverine’s consciousness back to 1973, where he must convince the younger Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr to work together. Their goal is to prevent an event that will eventually lead to the creation of the Sentinels and the devastating future they are trying to escape.
The trailer generated considerable anticipation because it promised to bring together characters and performers from different generations of the franchise. When the movie was released, it was well received by critics and general audiences, who praised its performances, action sequences, emotional story, and ability to combine the two eras of the franchise into one coherent film. It also became a major box-office success, earning more than $700 million worldwide.
Watching the trailer again today, it is easy to understand why Days of Future Past generated so much excitement back then. The combination of time travel, familiar characters, a dark future, and two generations of X-Men gave the movie a sense of scale that few superhero films at the time could match. The finished film ultimately lived up to much of that anticipation and remains one of the more fondly remembered installments of the X-Men series.
