Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot has plenty of opportunities to eXplore some of the franchise’s most memorable comic book storylines, particularly with Mister Sinister as part of the film’s villain lineup. While the focus will likely be on the mutant heroes coming together, two other elements from the comics could play an important role in the story: the Morlocks, a community of mutants living beneath the streets of New York City, and Victor Creed, better known as Sabretooth. Both have significant connections to the X-Men’s history with Mister Sinister, potentially giving Marvel Studios a way to introduce a darker side of the mutant world.
In the Marvel Comics, the Morlocks are a group of mutants who have chosen to live underground rather than face the prejudice and persecution directed at mutants on the surface. Their home beneath New York City provides refuge for those whose physical mutations make it difficult to blend into human society. The group has included characters such as Callisto, who became a prominent leader, and other mutants who found acceptance among their own community.
The Morlocks also have a major connection to one of the X-Men’s most famous comic book storylines, “Mutant Massacre.” Published in 1986, the crossover saw Mister Sinister send the Marauders, a team of ruthless mutant assassins, into the Morlocks’ underground home to slaughter its inhabitants. The attack left numerous Morlocks dead and forced survivors to fight for their lives. The storyline showed the horrifying lengths Sinister was willing to go in pursuit of his genetic ambitions, while giving the X-Men a crisis that extended beyond the usual battles against supervillains.
Another character who could fit into this storyline is Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth. One of Wolverine’s most dangerous enemies in the comics, Creed possesses enhanced strength, heightened senses, razor-sharp claws, and a powerful healing factor. However, his connection to Mister Sinister extends beyond his rivalry with Wolverine. During the “Mutant Massacre,” Sabretooth was one of the Marauders involved in the attack on the Morlocks. His brutal fighting style made him particularly dangerous during the assault, and his involvement tied him to Sinister’s larger campaign against the underground mutant community. Bringing Creed into the reboot could give the film a physically imposing antagonist operating alongside Sinister, rather than requiring the geneticist to confront the X-Men directly.
In the comics, Warren Worthington III, aka Angel, was deeply affected by the brutal attack on the Morlocks. The storyline helped set the stage for a devastating turning point in Warren’s life, as the events surrounding the massacre and its aftermath contributed to the dangerous circumstances that would lead to the loss of his wings and his future transformation into Archangel. Actor Asa Germann has been cast to portray the character in the live-action reboot, and one has to wonder if his storyline will play out in similar fashion. There were also moments where Callisto held Angel captive, for other means, like the situation below…
With Adam Driver cast as Mister Sinister, Marvel Studios has an opportunity to explore the character’s obsession with mutant genetics and his willingness to manipulate other mutants for his own purposes. Sabretooth could serve as one of Sinister’s most dangerous operatives, while the Morlocks could become the victims of a larger experiment designed to advance his research. Although the film does not need to recreate the “Mutant Massacre” exactly as it appeared in the comics, borrowing elements from the storyline could connect these characters in a way that feels grounded in the source material. It could also give the X-Men a compelling reason to investigate Sinister’s activities before discovering the full scope of his plans.
Of course, Marvel Studios has not confirmed that either the Morlocks or Sabretooth will appear in the upcoming reboot, and their future involvement continues to be speculation. Still, the comic book connections are there, and Sinister’s presence creates an opportunity to introduce these characters in meaningful ways.
