Bryan Singer briefly spoke about expanding the X-MEN universe in the latest issue of SFX Magazine. Using 20th Century Fox’s selection of Marvel superheroes, the director talked about “creative consultant” Mark Millar’s role with the films – including the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot – and how things will be utilized for future films.
“It’s been a worthwhile thing [working with Millar] as he’s been brought in to just look at the whole universe,” says Singer. “I’ve basically rebooted the universe twice already, in that I booted it up once with ‘X-Men’ and then rebooted it with ‘First Class.’ I’m very keenly interested in exploring the X-Men universe in the same way that Marvel have done with the Avengers. It’s an enormous universe and not just in the issues that it confronts. A lot of Marvel’s famous characters have already been used but there’s still a few left.”
Though Singer is looking at Marvel’s Avengers as inspiration for expanding the X-universe, and going bigger with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, he says that his films are night and day from their movies.
“You can never compete with that. Tonally it’s a very different experience as the X-Men movies operate on very specific themes and it’s a much more serious kind of universe as the Marvel movies universe is not so serious. It’s got its own emotional points and the characters are obviously amazing.”

Starting with the Wolverine and Days of Future Past, things are going to get really interesting with the X-Men films. I hope we get to see Cable and X-Fore at some point.
X4 and X5
Gambit solo movie
Mr Sinister and Apocalypse finally appearing
Gambit joining the team more the return of Nightcrawler, Cyclops and Angel too
First Class 3, with young Cyclops, Jean and Storm
new spin-offs
…
DOFP will be like a whole new beginning of the X-Men franchise, but with the same cast. So exciting!!
Just move on with X-Men 5 and X-Men 6! (DOFP is X4 for me) And introduce Psylocke, Mr. Sinsiter, Apocalypse, Polaris, Forge, Avalanche, etc…
A movie for New Mutants, X-Factor, a third First Class movie and those other spin-offs are not a bad idea, but seriously how are these films gonna make more money or at least make the executive happy with the box-office return. If they just focus on the original trilogy, they are using their biggest asset and their more chances for success. With spin-offs, its always a risk.
They can expand the X-Men universe by releasing a film every 2 to 3 years. Thats how most film series expanded the universe/world of the characters that are in the movie.
I meant original cast when I said original trilogy.
I so agree with you on this being both a XFC 2 and X4 it’s like if anything X5 is next. This was obviously what Donner referred to when saying X4 leads to X5. I have a feeling were getting X5 next.
I think this is just the beginning of new and much darker X-men films. They going to step up this time coz they felt that X-men films are being left behind by the other Marvel movies like the amazing spider-man and the avengers..
Now it’s X-men’s time to shine!
Thats why they neeed to do a X-Men 5 movie after DOFP is released.
Seriously, this franchise won’t be able to compete with Spider-Man, Avengers, Superman, Batman and those other MCU films, if they continue to release spin-offs or prequels like Wolverine, First Class, Deadpool. X-Men were in much better shape when they were releasing films with the original trilogy cast.
They should make X-men 4 immediately maybe same year as the XFC3
If they ever decide to do a xmen 4 and more they better hurry up. patrick steward is not getting any younger and you can see of the original actors ageing.
I actually want this to be the last film of Magneto/Professor X.
So in X-Men 5, there’s a new fresh start, maybe they could finally focus on the team and the X-Men would be facing new villains!
If the original cast don’t want to return after DOFP then they should focus on another team in the same original trilogy timeline, with maybe one or two original trilogy characters returning (X-Force, X-Factor, Generation X, etc). That way you can continue that original trilogy world (assuming it survives DOFP) and have the FC films be their own thing.
Yeah.. or at least some of the original x-men member will join those new team and be part of the new x-men world.. let say, Professor X introduce the New Mutants, New X-men or even The Squadrons..
I must to admit that at some point, the original x-men trilogy will end and be replaced with new ones.. but i’m still hoping there is a chance for a supporting role in the future.. 😀
totally agree with Anthony and other users, Fox can do two different teams in the future, and even if some actors decide to move on one day, Fox could easily get some of the original actors leading a new team. For example, James Marsden as Cyclops back as the leader and moving forward with some “older” x-men and new characters, more or less like current comics. It would be pretty cool and would give James the good role and screentime he deserves
I don’t see why they couldn’t put XFC3 and X4 into production at the same time.
Maybe Vaughan comes back to close out the First Class trilogy, while Bryan moves over to X4. Or maybe they get someone new entirely. Or maybe Bryan has a third First Class story he wants to tell himself.
I say they go wherever the story leads. But lets be clear First Class revitalized the X-Men movies. There’s a chunk of the audience now, who want to see what happens next with that cast. It would be stupid to ignore that. Thankfully they don’t seem to be.
I think a third movie after DoFP to button things up for those guys would be a good idea. And no doubt profitable.
I also want X-Men 4, with the original cast. But they’re going to have to start thinking about how they might move forward without Stewart and McKellen…
oversaturation, confusion to general audience.
X-Men is not even one of the biggest film franchises. Its better if they just focus on one cast after DOFP is released. The magic in making First Class movies is gone when they brought back the original cast and show the modern day world.
Disagree!
On all counts. Particularly the over-saturation/confusion argument.
Fox are gearing up to expand a universe here, which can only mean more X-Movies, and First Class has already proven successful. Why wouldn’t they do more.
Also, I think you do the intelligence of the general audience a disservice by suggesting they’d be confused by two movies featuring two different X-Men teams, existing in two different eras, being produced in parallel.
I think another movie featuring the First Class cast, that perhaps leaps forward another ten tears into the 80’s, could be very cool.
I wouldn’t go beyond that, though.
I’m hopeful that DoFP will do enough to reignite audiences interest in the original cast, but my sense at the moment is that folks are more interested in McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence, and Hoult.
Why squander that?
I want my cake, and by god I aim to eat it too.. 🙂
I wouldn’t mind if the “First Class” and original trilogy films split into two separate franchises. Just focus on different characters and teams. Hopefully the new characters in the DOFP future timeline are developed and can continue the story. There’s a ton of X-titles out there. They can have modern/future films under a different title.
I believe they can share in the same universe but in different teams and characters..In that way, it’s still X-men but with a broader story line..
Lets see some pics of Sentinals !!! come on bryan!
Yes!! 🙂
*we might be waiting awhile for this one* 🙁
Hopefully there’s a Sentinel reveal at Comic Con!
They must do an X-Men/Avengers crossover movie.
Too much to hope for, I fear.
That would be insane. The biggest film ever!
that would be an Avenger VS X-men Storyline.. the epic one..
Thing is, for years it was believed that an Avengers movie would never – could never – happen.
They’re now hard at work on a second one…
Avengers Vs X-Men is very VERY unlikely. Impossibly remote in fact. But I’ve learned to never say never anymore…
As for a Justice League crossover?
Sure! Why not?
Though, seeing as they don’t even inhabit the same comicbook universe, let alone movie universe, it is even more remote and unlikely.
But feel free to imagine… 🙂
Marvel and Fox should just work together. Would be loads of $$$ for both studios. They might be upset with the whole Quicksilver thing though, idk…
