Before Jennifer Lawrence slinked onto the scene as the shape-shifting mutant Mystique, there was Rebecca Romijn – and make no mistake, she made the biggest impression.
When X-Men hit theaters in 2000, comic book movies weren’t the pop culture juggernauts they are today. But there was something about the mysterious, blue-skinned mutant with the piercing yellow eyes that instantly caught everyone’s attention. And that “something” was Rebecca Romijn’s unforgettable portrayal of Raven Darkhölme, aka Mystique.
An iconic look, Romijn was covered head-to-toe in blue body paint and prosthetics that took up to nine hours to apply. That’s right – she started getting into costume before most of us even wake up, all to transform into a character who didn’t just walk into a room… she slithered. Mystique wasn’t just dangerous, she was mesmerizing.
With almost no dialogue, Romijn relied on body language, expression, and sheer presence to sell the character. She delivered! Her Mystique was equal parts stealthy assassin and misunderstood mutant. She fought like a ninja, and had a stare that could make Magneto himself flinch.
Over the course of the original X-Men trilogy, Romijn’s Mystique evolved from silent henchwoman to tragic figure. In X2: X-Men United, we got to see more of her cleverness. Remember when she impersonated Wolverine and seduced him just to throw him off his game? Classic Mystique. And in X-Men: The Last Stand, her loyalty to Magneto was put to the test when she lost her powers. His cold reaction? “She’s not one of us anymore.” Oof.
Romijn’s version of Mystique might’ve been light on words, but the character has a huge presence in Marvel Comics. She’s been a terrorist, a spy, a double agent, and a mother (Nightcrawler’s dad, and Rogue’s adopted mom too). Her complicated history with the X-Men and her frequent moral flip-flopping make her one of the most compelling mutants created.
The films never dove into her family ties or her rich backstory, but Romijn still channeled that comic book energy: unpredictable, deadly, and always several steps ahead. It’s a shame we never got to see her spar with characters like Destiny (Mystique’s longtime partner in the comics) or deal with her complex maternal instincts. But never say never…
With Romijn’s Mystique finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Ian McKellen’s Magneto and the X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday, fans are buzzing about which look the mutant will sport. Her classic white dress from the comics? Sources tell us a white bodysuit with skull emblem is more likely with this iteration.
There’s a fan theory floating around that if Secret Wars brings together multiversal versions of characters, Romijn could cross paths with Lawrence’s Mystique. A quick cameo as one of her transformations is also a possibility. Wouldn’t that be epic?
Here’s to Rebecca Romijn: the original comic book movie femme fatale who proved that actions can speak louder than words. Her Mystique helped shape the legacy of the X-Men on screen, and for that, we’re forever thankful!
