We haven’t heard much about THE NEW MUTANTS since Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) was announced as writer and director exactly three months ago, but now there’s an update on the progress being made. Boone took to his Twitter and Instagram to let fans know that he and co-writer Knate Gwaltney (Kidnap) are “hard at work on the script,” although he “can’t share any details right now!” Even better, he snapped a photo of the screenplay, noting that it’s “not done yet, but we have a lot of pages.”
Based on the popular Marvel comics, The New Mutants is a group of teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training. They have been the main characters of three successive comic book series, which often highlight interpersonal and group conflict as well as action and adventure. It featured a large ensemble cast, including the introduction of cult figures Deadpool and Cable. With the end of the first series, the team were relaunched as X-Force in a new, eponymous series.
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” said Simon Kinberg, who’s producing with Lauren Shuler Donner.
A release date is not set, though Fox has a mysterious July 13, 2018 date that is still unclaimed.
