DARK PHOENIX: Sophie Turner and Jessica Chastain preview footage with Simon Kinberg at CCXP18.

DARK PHOENIX writer and director Simon Kinberg appeared at CCXP18 in São Paulo, Brazil Friday evening along with stars Sophie Turner and Jessica Chastain to a crowded convention hall.

Kinberg confirmed that the film is “probablly closest in tone to LOGAN, the last Wolverine movie which is grounded and emotional and about the character and getting extraordinary actors a chance to really act.”

He said that while the film has no connection or hint towards the MCU, he was inspired by Kevin Feige while working on the screenplay and finding the right tone. He also took elements from other Marvel comics, including the popular Secret Invasion run.

This includes the introdution of supernatural and cosmic elements in the X-Men universe with Chastain’s mysterious alien character. “[I will fight all of the X-Men] in the movie and I’m really tough, so it was fun” she said while grinning from ear-to-ear. The actress later got a thunderous applause after saying how she liked seeing female characters in stories: “the X-Men should be called X-Women.”

Chastain’s powerful alien will share a relationship with Jean Grey that’s “not so conflictive.” Turner joined in, saying she “had fun” shooting scenes with Chastain and Magneto actor, Michael Fassbender.

According to @STurnerBrasil, Turner talked about the pressure of making such a beloved character in a classic comic book saga, while concluding that she trusts Kinberg’s work. With this film she’ll become the real Phoenix and have to deal with pain, abandonement and her evolution.

To get a better idea of how to explore Grey’s internal dialogue and mood changes into the Dark Phoenix, Kinberg and Turner spent hours listening to voices in their heads via electronic devices; also studying the effects of schizophreniz and mental health.

Turner also commented that her character is “in a good place” with Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops, unlike 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ which saw Grey’s love interest 6 feet under and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine front and center.

The panel ended with 13-15 minutes of footage in a sequence which appears to be similar to what was shown at New York Comic Con last October.

According to Plantão de Nerdices, they showed a “hallucinating space rescue scene involving the X-Men and a group of astronauts,” which led to a very thrilled audience. “Even with unfinished effect’s the thrilling sequel won standing applause.”

“[There was] a very nice stretch of Jean’s transformation in Phoenix,” complimented @PHSantos, “and it’s a lot different to see the X-Men as heros instead of being hunted.”

“It included how Jean Grey first interacts with the Phoenix. Mind. Blown. Amazing footage, acting and stakes,” said @Lodix1.

“It is the scene where Jean receives the impact of the Phoenix Force in space,” followed up @LBaini. “A lot of teamwork and differences between Mystique and Xavier. Very feminist approach.”
