Marvel has released a brief behind the scenes look at DARK PHOENIX showing Jean Grey actress Sophie Turner on the Montreal set. The footage comes from the 5-part documentary Rise of the Phoenix: The Making of Dark Phoenix, which is included on the film’s Blu-ray, available now in stores.
“Rarely have I ever seen somebody come to a movie more prepared than Sophie was,” said producer Hutch Parker.
“Sophie did all kinds of research, especially on schizophrenia,” said director and writer Simon Kinberg. “She would walk around in preparation for the movie with headphones in her ears with just random voices playing so that she would know what it felt like to have to walk through the world hearing voices that you couldn’t control; that weren’t actually embodied voices of the people who were in the room or in the space with you.”
“How disorienting would it be?” continued Parker. “How disturbing would it be? All by way of trying to understand what this character might be going through.”
“The thing about Jean Grey is that she’s not a villain,” said Turner. “But she’s not like a ‘dun dun dun dun’ superhero gonna save the world! Everything is fine! She’s very tormented and broken and has a real kind of realism to her.”
