Video: Simon Kinberg on his decision to kill off popular X-Men favorite in DARK PHOENIX.

In this behind the scenes look at DARK PHOENIX, Mystique actress Jennifer Lawrence and writer/director Simon Kinberg opens up about the decision to kill off one of the X-Men’s biggest characters; a shocking moment which was revealed in advance of the film’s theatrical release.

“We’ve gone a lot of different places with Raven,” said Lawrence. “She chose Magneto in the first movie and totally ditched Charles. Then by the second movie, she kind of became this mutant hero. I think that in this movie, all of that is kind of coming to a head now, especially with Jean.”

“It was important to me that we do something in this film which felt fresh and different than what we’ve done in the past,” said Kinberg. “I felt like one of the things I really wanted for Jean/Phoenix in this movie was to do something in the middle of the film that would shock the audience and tell the audience that, as opposed to normal superhero movies, franchise movies, where the same characters come back 6, 7, 8 movies in a row, that nobody was safe. That we could kill arguably the biggest movie star in the world and that would be, in some ways, a sort of emotional bomb that would be dropped in the middle of the film and it would start to really break the X-Men apart.”

Dark Phoenix is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
