Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine for DEADPOOL 3! In news that certainly broke the internet, star Ryan Reynolds announced via social media that director Shawn Levy’s threequel will release in theaters on September 6, 2024. That’s an epic year for Marvel Studios, with Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four also on the menu.
Although Jackman was pretty adamant in the past about not reprising his character – who died at the end of Logan (2017) – the passage of time can change one’s mind…especially if a friend like Reynolds encourages you under the ever so popular MCU umbrella. Let’s not forget Patrick Stewart recently appeared as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, despite previous comments of retiring the role.

There are no firm details on the plot for Deadpool 3, but Reynolds once mentioned wanting to make a road trip comedy with the merc with a mouth and Wolverine. Since FoXverse Wolverine is dead, it’s unknown if the character we meet, like Earth-838 Charles Xavier, will be a variant or returning from the afterlife. Deadpool has to find his way into the MCU, so it’ll be exciting to see how this is achieved.
Are any other mutants expected to appear? That’s under guarded secrecy, but rumors point to Zazie Beetz’s Domino and maybe even Josh Brolin’s Cable making a return in some capacity. Why stop at Wolverine? Wouldn’t it be awesome if he was joined by Halle Berry’s Storm, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, and Anna Paquin’s Rogue? That would be a dream, but we’ll have to wait and see!
One interesting theory is studio head Kevin Feige using this legendary crossover to debut the MCU’s proper Wolverine. Perhaps Jackman himself will help with in casting a new actor in the role moving forward, as his reprisal is believed to be a limited one.
Check out this funny string of tweets where Reynolds, Levy, and Jackman nonchalantly share the jaw-dropping news.
