James McAvoy praises X-Men experience, and reveals his “biggest criticism” of the quadrilogy.

Speaking with GQ magazine, Professor Charles Xavier actor James McAvoy shared his overall experience making four X-Men films under 20th Century Fox. “It was one of the most positive experiences I’ve had with a studio. I don’t really [see them as just] money gigs. Days of Future Past I think is one of the better films that I’ve been involved in.”

“My biggest criticism of what we did throughout the four movies was that after the first movie, we didn’t take advantage of the relationship between [Xavier and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto], which really formed the backbone of the first film,” he continued. “So it was like, why did we just eject that massive weapon?”

While Charles and Erik were at the forefront of First Class and Days of Future Past their relationship did take a backseat in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix to give the X-Men team members more focus. They spent both films mostly apart, sharing only a number of scenes together.

Given past comments from McAvoy, there’s the impression he has moved on from the role. “I’m very quick to say, ‘No, I’m done.’ Or ‘I’m not that bothered about coming back.’ Because you move forward.” Still, the Marvel Studios machine is strong, and a call could come at any given moment. “I’ve definitely not got the call.
