John Staub, senior illustrator at Marvel Studios, has shared various concept artworks he created for Deadpool & Wolverine. Included are early designs for Patch, Elektra, Blade, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Cassandra Nova, Headpool and the Deadpool Corps.
“A bunch of us got to do some Wolverine variants! This was my take on patch,” he wrote.
“This version was meant to show that she has been in the void for a while and her costume has changed through wear and tear and fixes and adjustments.”
“It was a true work of passion to find a good balance between making the look feel familiar to the fans but also updated for the new film.”
“Never thought I would ever get a chance to paint Chris Evans, so I was absolutely thrilled and honored for the opportunity to be able paint him in the red white and blue ;)”
“There was an emphasis on her fashion so I tried to give her this high fashion look but still is reminiscent of her comic look for this pass.”
“Normally we try to ground a lot of our characters when we translate them from the comic medium to film and find a realistic reason as why they have a certain look, but for this guy I just had to lean into the craziness and create a look that would fit the tone of the film.”
“This was a super fun keyframe depicting one of the fight sequences in the film. The song was already chosen at that point so listening to it while working on the piece definitely added a layer of enjoyment to the experience.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
