How Disney Plus Can eXpand Marvel Studios’ X-Men Cinematic Universe

With the X-Men set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney+ provides the perfect platform for character-focused stories that delve into the lives of our most favorite mutants. While fans await the inevitable ensemble film in the next 2-3 years, a series of solo projects could introduce audiences to key characters before/during/after they come together as a team. A few ideas for Marvel Television…

Rogue & Gambit

One of the most beloved X-Men couples, Rogue and Gambit, have a dynamic filled with romance, tension, and adventure. A series following their journey could explore their origins—Rogue’s troubled past, and Gambit’s involvement with the Thieves Guild in New Orleans. Their on-again, off-again relationship would add drama, while heists and mutant rivalries could provide action-packed storytelling.

Storm: Goddess of Thunder

Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm, is one of the most powerful mutants and an icon in Marvel history. A solo series could follow her origins as a street thief in Cairo, her transformation into a goddess, and her rise as a leader among mutants. Storm’s story could span multiple locations and introduce mythical elements, making for a visually stunning and emotionally compelling series.

Wolverine: Weapon X Chronicles

While Wolverine is a popular character that will get a major role in the MCU, a Disney+ series could focus on his time as a subject of the Weapon X program. This show could be a dark, psychological thriller showing Logan’s transformation into a living weapon, his struggles with memory loss, and his escape from government control. Cameos from other mutants like Sabretooth and Alpha Flight could enhance the story.

Nightcrawler: Shadow & Faith

Kurt Wagner, the teleporting blue mutant known as Nightcrawler, has a rich backstory filled with mystery, faith, and action. A series could explore his early years in a German circus, his discovery of his powers, and his struggles with acceptance due to his demonic appearance. Themes of faith, belonging, and heroism would make Nightcrawler’s journey unique, with visually stunning action sequences utilizing his teleportation abilities.

Jean Grey: The Phoenix Legacy

Jean Grey’s connection to the Phoenix Force has been explored in past X-Men films, but a Disney+ series could take a slower, more character-driven approach. Starting with her childhood and early training under Charles Xavier, the show could explore her struggle to control her immense psychic abilities and the eventual emergence of the Phoenix Force. It could serve as a psychological drama with cosmic elements, leading to a larger role in future MCU films.

Psylocke: Assassin’s Path

Psylocke, also known as Betsy Braddock, has one of the most intriguing backstories in X-Men lore. A Disney+ series could explore her time as a British psychic, her entanglement with the Hand, and her transformation into the deadly ninja warrior with telekinetic blades. With espionage, martial arts, and mutant intrigue, this could be Marvel’s answer to a sleek, action-packed assassin thriller.

Magneto: Rise of the Brotherhood

A Magneto-focused series would be a powerful drama detailing Erik Lehnsherr’s life from his tragic origins to his rise as the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants. The show could explore his shifting moral compass, complex relationship with Charles Xavier, and his battle for mutant supremacy. With political intrigue and deep philosophical debates about coexistence versus resistance, Magneto’s story could be a compelling, thought-provoking series.

Iceman

Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, has long been an underrated yet beloved X-Men member. A solo series could explore his coming-of-age journey, his struggle with identity (both as a mutant and his LGBTQ+ storyline from the comics), and his evolution from a carefree jokester to a confident hero. With cool (literally) action sequences and heartfelt character moments, Iceman’s show could offer a fresh perspective on being a mutant in the modern world.

Disney+ offers the opportunity to flesh out Marvel’s beloved X-Men characters, allowing them to develop their stories in ways that a two-hour film can’t accommodate. By delving into their histories, these series could help establish mutants within the MCU, building anticipation for their big screen appearances.
