X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is stirring up quite the buzz, especially with the return of several beloved characters from the X-Men universe. Among the most anticipated returns is Rebecca Romijn, who is once again stepping into the shoes of the iconic shape-shifter, Mystique, a role she first brought to life in X-Men (2000). Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at their San Diego Comic-Con suite, Romijn opened up about her experience on set, her role in the new Marvel film, and what it’s like to revisit a character she hasn’t played in nearly two decades.

When asked whether she had wrapped filming, Romijn admitted that she wasn’t entirely sure, primarily due to the unfinished state of the script. “I’m not entirely sure,” she said with a grin. “The script hasn’t been completed yet. It’s been a really fun process, and we don’t have a full picture yet. They’re keeping things under wraps, which is part of the fun!”

Romijn remained secretive when asked whether she had read the entire script, joking, “I cannot confirm nor deny that I’ve read the whole thing.” She also kept quiet about the specific co-stars she shared scenes with but did describe the surreal feeling of reuniting with her original X-Men trilogy castmates like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Kelsey Grammer and James Marsden, while working alongside a new wave of talent.

“It felt so surreal to be on set with both my original cast and the new actors,” Romijn recalled. “It was almost dreamlike. I had these wild, regressive dreams during filming, like my brain was trying to process everything. It was strange to think, ‘Wow, I’m playing a character I first portrayed over 20 years ago!’”

With Avengers: Doomsday arriving on December 18, 2026, it’s clear that her return will be one of the most exciting moments for fans of the original X-Men films. Whether or not her full involvement in the story remains a mystery, one thing is certain… Mystique is back!
