Marvel Studios is officially back in superhero stride with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which ignited the box office this weekend with a fantastic $218 million worldwide debut. The film opened to $118 million domestically and an additional $100 million overseas, making it a successful launch in recent Marvel history.

Playing across 4,125 North American theaters, the film tallied a strong three-day weekend, beginning with a fiery $57 million Friday (including Thursday previews), followed by $33.2 million on Saturday, and wrapping up with $27.8 million on Sunday. For a reboot of Marvel’s first family, one that fans have long been waiting to see done right, this performance signals that audiences are more than ready to embrace a new era of heroes.

Directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman, the film reintroduces Marvel’s iconic quartet: Pedro Pascal stars as the brilliant and stretchy Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby takes on the role of Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach transforms into Ben Grimm (The Thing), and Joseph Quinn brings an added dose of energy to Johnny Storm (Human Torch).

This reboot dives straight into the team’s cosmic responsibilities as they battle a looming interstellar threat in the form of a planet-devouring entity known as Galactus (Ralph Ineson). First Steps is already being praised as one of the most emotionally grounded and visually ambitious entries in the MCU.

Critics and fans alike are responding positively. The film holds a strong 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore, indicating strong word-of-mouth potential going into its second weekend. These scores suggest that not only is the franchise off to a hot start financially, but it may have the legs to sustain its momentum long-term.

With a reported production budget north of $200 million, the film had a lot riding on it. But this debut marks a crucial win for Marvel Studios, which has faced questions in recent years about superhero fatigue and franchise oversaturation. Fantastic Four: First Steps feels like a fresh shot of energy, and the early numbers back that up.

Marvel fans can celebrate a successful reintroduction of the first family of comics, one that is taking first steps toward something even greater.
