X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

As Marvel Studios heads towards the ultimate culmination of storylines from the multiverse saga, fans were surprised and disappointed to see that Avengers: Doomsday will feature several returning X-Men actors, but not Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey.

The upcoming ensemble film includes a number of iconic names from Fox’s original X-Men franchise: Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast) are all confirmed. Janssen, however, was notably absent from the announced cast, along with Halle Berry (Storm) and Anna Paquin (Rogue) – who could be missing due to health issues.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Janssen addressed the omission candidly:

“Yeah, to be honest with you, I don’t really know the storyline, so I’m not sure,” she said. “It’s not my world, it’s never been my world, really, that whole comic book world. I should know by now, I’ve been in it long enough. But I’m really excited to see when it comes out. Just like everyone else, I’ll find out what those storylines are and how it all ended up.”

The actress, who played Jean Grey/Phoenix across multiple X-Men films, from 2000’s original through to her appearance in The Wolverine and Days of Future Past, also spoke with appreciation for her time in the franchise:

“Those were great films to be part of, and they’ve done so many good things for my career.”

While she may not be involved in Avengers: Doomsday, Janssen’s portrayal of Jean Grey remains a pivotal part of the legacy that helped shape today’s superhero film landscape. Her perspective also sheds light on the complicated relationship many actors have with sprawling cinematic universes, especially ones as intricate and ever-expanding as the MCU.

Whether her exclusion is due to narrative direction, scheduling, or simply creative choice, it’s clear Janssen holds no ill will. Like us, she’ll be watching with curiosity when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters. And who knows, there’s always a possibility for her, Berry, and Paquin to return with Avengers: Secret Wars.
