X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

As Marvel Studios sets the stage for a major event with Avengers: Doomsday, there are two of Marvel Comics’ most iconic storylines which might serve as narrative blueprints: House of M and Avengers vs. X-Men. A powerful, emotionally charged, and universe-shaking storyline that not only ties together lingering plot threads from earlier phases, but also introduces the long-anticipated arrival of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The House of M storyline in the comics revolves around Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) suffering a mental breakdown and warping reality to create a world where mutants are the dominant species. The fallout from that arc leads to the infamous moment when she utters “No more mutants,” depowering almost the entire mutant population. While the MCU’s version of Wanda has already flirted with alternate realities in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she’s presumed dead. But what about her variants? House of M could serve as a part of Avengers: Doomsday, with a multiverse Wanda siding with Doctor Doom and doing some damage that puts her at odds with her father, Ian McKellen’s Magneto. Or maybe the role could be given to Doom himself, with grief and manipulation of reality (via magic) becoming a trigger for an apocalyptic event that unravels the multiverse.

On the other hand, Avengers vs. X-Men presents a very different conflict, one that pits Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against mutantkind in a battle over the Phoenix Force. In the comics, the Phoenix is returning to Earth, and both sides have differing views on whether it will bring salvation or destruction. With the Phoenix already teased through the Dark Phoenix arcs in Fox’s X-Men films, Marvel Studios could reinterpret the cosmic entity through the lens of its own continuity.

What makes the combination of House of M and Avengers vs. X-Men so tantalizing is how well they complement each other. House of M can serve as the inciting incident, perhaps the accidental unleashing of mutantkind across the multiverse due to a multiversal anomaly. That, in turn, creates tension between the Avengers and mutants, setting up the divide that leads into an Avengers vs. X-Men-style showdown when their worlds ultimately collide. The Avengers, perhaps still reeling from the chaos of incursions, might see mutants as a destabilizing threat, while the X-Men view the Avengers as elitists trying to control the multiverse.

If Avengers: Doomsday aims to be a culmination of multiple threads, this dual storyline adaptation would provide a natural opportunity to integrate both legacy heroes and fresh faces. Imagine a conflict where Binary clashes with Captain Marvel, Cyclops squares off against Sam Wilson’s Captain America, or Magneto battles Doctor Doom over the morality of multiversal manipulation.

Ultimately, by blending House of M’s emotional tragedy with Avengers vs. X-Men’s epic ideological war, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom at the center of it all, Marvel Studios could craft a cataclysmic finale. It would give us the high-stakes spectacle expected from an Avengers film while also delivering personal character arcs that made the Infinity Saga connect with audiences. Whether Avengers: Doomsday is a literal doomsday or a figurative reckoning for the MCU’s heroes, these two storylines provide a compelling blueprint for pushing the MCU into its next, unpredictable chapter.
