Avengers: Doomsday is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about Marvel projects in years, and James Marsden is adding even more intrigue with new details about his return as Cyclops.
Speaking with ComicBook while promoting the upcoming Hulu film Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, Marsden opened up about stepping back into the role, revealing that his decision to join the film didn’t hinge on reading a completed script. Instead, the process was surprisingly straightforward, built more on trust and conversation than anything else.
“It was a conversation,” Marsden revealed about how he was convinced to return. “And in that conversation, we talked about what my involvement would be and everything, but I hadn’t actually read the script yet. So that was something like, yeah, sure, yes, of course.”
Beyond the way he signed on, Marsden also reflected on what it feels like returning to Cyclops without sharing the screen (at least for now) with his longtime X-Men counterpart, Hugh Jackman. Wolverine and Cyclops have long been defined by their tense dynamic, something Marsden clearly values.
“I love Hugh Jackman, and I love the dynamic between Wolverine and Cyclops,” Marsden said. “It was always a brotherly, healthy competition between the two of them, where they were annoyed with each other. It did feel like a brotherly relationship. I wouldn’t say that I was excited to slide into that role without him barking in my ear. He was missed. I’m trying to… answer, without saying too much… Yeah, that’s my answer. “
At this point, Marsden’s return is confirmed, but Jackman’s involvement remains a mystery. When we last saw Logan, he was chilling with Deadpool. While he might not share screentime with his fellow X-Men, an uneXpected appearance is still very much on the table.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
