DC Studios is continuing to build momentum for its new era, as James Gunn has officially announced that Lanterns, a live-action series inspired by DC’s iconic Green Lantern mythology, will premiere August 16 on HBO Max.
Alongside the announcement, Gunn shared a new teaser image. The photo highlights a Green Lantern ring connecting with its power battery, which is an essential moment that underscores the mythology of the Lantern Corps.
Lanterns is expected to follow legendary Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a mysterious case on Earth. Early previews suggest a more grounded, detective-style tone.
On the casting side, Kyle Chandler is playing Hal Jordan, a seasoned presence to the role of the veteran Lantern, while Aaron Pierre will portray John Stewart, a disciplined and fan-favorite hero whose newer perspective pushes the story forward. The pairing of these two characters will serve as the emotional backbone of the series.
The series is being developed by an impressive creative team that includes Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost), and Tom King, known for his acclaimed work on DC Comics titles like Batman and Mister Miracle. Their combined experience in prestige television is expected to bring a premium quality to the series.
