Halle Berry is welcoming Maya Boyd’s casting as Storm in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot, expressing eXcitement about seeing the young actress put her own interpretation on the iconic mutant.
Berry, who originated the role of Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, in the original X-Men film series, spoke with People at the Create & Cultivate Festival in Los Angeles about Boyd taking over the weather-controlling mutant for a new generation.
“I believe she’s going to kill it. You know what I mean?” Berry said.
Boyd’s casting was officially revealed at D23, where Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the cast of the upcoming reboot. Boyd joins Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
After portraying Storm in four films, Berry says she is particularly interested in seeing what Boyd brings to the character rather than attempting to replicate her previous performance.
“Yeah, there’s people playing Storm. No, my Storm was my Storm and I wish her so well,” she continued. “I very much look forward to seeing what her version will be. I’m sure she’s going to murder it.”
Berry also compared the experience to another comic book character she has played: Catwoman, whom she portrayed in the 2004 film. She explained that different performers naturally develop their own understanding of an established character.
Marvel Studios’ new X-Men film will be directed by Jake Schreier and is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.
