Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs, the upcoming horror film from writer and director Mike Flanagan. Starring Academy Award® nominee Scarlett Johansson, the film marks a new chapter in one of cinema’s most storied horror franchises. Known for acclaimed projects including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Doctor Sleep, Flanagan brings his signature approach to psychological horror and supernatural terror to the franchise.
Thirteen years after bringing satanic serial killer Father Sunday to justice, New York City detective Julie Miller (Johansson) finds herself pulled back into a nightmare when a new killer leaves her name written in an altar boy’s blood inside a church crypt. Working alongside former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Miller uncovers a disturbing connection between a lineage of serial killers and an evil that reaches beyond the mortal world.
The ensemble cast also includes Diane Lane, Scoot McNairy, Gil Bellows, Laurence Fishburne, and John Leguizamo. Based on characters created by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist: Martyrs is produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan. The film opens in theaters on March 12.
