Hugh Jackman confirmed to Total Film that James Mangold’s THE WOLVERINE is not a sequel to Gavin Hood’s X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, and is a standalone film, with an entirely new cast and setting.
Via The Geek Files — “We’ve deliberately not called it ‘Wolverine 2’ because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture.” says star, Hugh Jackman. “With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it’s going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic. The approach to character means we won’t be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it’ll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film.”
On the multiple delays in the film’s production, he says “I’m just really glad it’s happening. For a while it’s felt like a rocky ride. I’ve been waiting for it so long now,” he jokes, “I think half the material in my one-man show is about the wait for The Wolverine!”

This is fake. There is a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray of Origins that shows Wolverine in Japan without his memory, already looking for answers. So shut up with this BS.
It can’t be a standalone movie. Wolverine got his adamantium claw in this film, which only means that its connected to the first one.

Honestly, I think this idea is sh*t…I didn’t like the first movie with the timelines etc. And now they make another spin off? Sorry…Another SPINOFF for Wolverine? No…No…Just…No!

Producers wanted to do the Japanese story first, but Fox wanted an origin picture.
There are plenty Wolverine stories to tell! He had his own solo comic book series for many years.

I’m not buying Hugh Jackman’s claim that this film is a ”standalone.” If Fox really wanted to make this film a true standalone, they would’ve re-cast the role of Wolverine.
