Kodi Smit-McPhee spoke with Den of Geek about playing Nightcrawler in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE during last week’s press tour for his film ‘Slow West’.
“I think I’m really gonna make it my own,” said the actor when comparing his role to that of Alan Cumming’s portrayal in X2. “Because it’s going back, I realized the Nightcrawler that’s portrayed in X2 has been through quite a bit more and really embraced the superhero part of him, that kind of violent part, whereas I think what they’re trying to show here is the more vulnerable Nightcrawler, the one we all kind of relate to when they’re explaining his past story in the comics.
“It’s really the fun, happy, swash-buckling Nightcrawler that we all love, so I really can’t wait to portray that – he’s very vulnerable, truthful and grounded in his faith and I think it’s something new that we’ll see , but [with] all of the traditional things that we want in it.”
He told MTV that Nightcrawler’s “state of mind and his intention in life is all very close to mind. He’s a very truthful, grounded person, even though he is a superhero. I can’t wait to express that connection there.”
‘Apocalypse’ is currently in production for a May 27, 2016 theatrical release.
