Deadline Hollywood reports that “Fargo: Season 2” breakout actress Rachel Keller has landed the female lead in FX’s upcoming LEGION television series. Showrunner Noah Hawley and “X-Men” producers signed off on Keller after she garnered praise for her portrayal of Simone Gerhardt in Hawley’s Fargo; this will be her first leading role. She’ll play a character who’s described as a “scrappy, optimistic woman in her 20s” that has the ability to access others through human touch.

Based in the X-Men universe, the show will introduce the story of David Haller, a powerful mutant, who (in the comics) is the illegitimate son of Professor Charles Xavier. Since he was a teenager, David struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, he has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

Hawley wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producer, joining X-Men film producers Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory, John Cameron and Steve Blackman.

“Legion is just the sort of ambitious story that Noah excels at,” FX’s Nick Grad said last year. “His adaption of Fargo for television was one of the most acclaimed television events in recent memory. It’s also an honor to partner with Marvel on Legion and to enlist such an accomplished team of Executive Producers to create this pilot.”

That’s not all for X-Men on TV! Fox is also developing a 1960’s-set HELLFIRE series with 24’s Evan Katz, Manny Coto and Star Trek 3’s Patrick McKay and JD Payne.
