According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Stranger Things” star Charlie Heaton is currently in negotiations to join the impressive cast of NEW MUTANTS as Sam Guthrie aka Cannonball.
Guthrie is a well-known character in comic books, having been a member of the X-Men at one point himself. He has the ability to generate thermo-chemical energy and release it from his skin, causing his body to be propelled through the air like a rocket.
Heaton will join Anya Taylor-Joy as the dimension-hopping sorceress Magik, Maisie Williams as the wolf-transforming Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as the fiery Sunspot and Rosario Dawson as their mutant mentor, Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
We’re still awaiting official word on who will be cast as Dani Moonstar, a Native American mutant which has close ties to one of the film’s antagonists, the Demon Bear, and Warlock, who’s a bio-mecha alien.
The rumored plot involves five young mutants who are being held in a secret facility against their will, having to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.
“New Mutants” begins production this July in Boston with director Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) for theatrical release on April 13, 2018.
