Jennifer Lawrence had “the best experience” filming her scenes for X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX.

It’s no secret, Mystique actress Jennifer Lawrence isn’t a fan of the long process it takes to become the blue shape-shifting mutant. “I love these movies – it’s just the paint,” she told Entertainment Weekly back in 2015, citing how she couldn’t even pronounce the paint chemicals that were going through her nose. “I’m breathing that?”

So why did Lawrence return for X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX? She made it no secret during X-Men: Apocalypse that she was weighing her options with the future of the franchise, only saying she’d return if James McAvoy (Professor X) and Michael Fassbender (Magneto) signed on as well.

Turns out another big factor was writer Simon Kinberg signing on as director, something she actually urged him to do.

“I kind of f—ed myself,” she said. “Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, ‘If I direct it, you have to do it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course! Duh!’ Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, ‘Goddammit!’” But she adds, “It was the fan base, though, too — the other reason was for the fans.”

The fan community has been very split about Lawrence’s portrayal of Mystique. Some like what she’s bringing to the role, while others are extremely critical. It seems Dark Phoenix will provide her with scenes where she can show off her full range.

“Acting-wise it was the best experience I’ve had [on these films]. [Kinberg’s] been writing these characters for so long and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before.”

It seems this was a good experience returning to the X-Men, as the film’s production went successfully without any hiccups.

“It was unrecognizable,” admits Lawrence. “Everything was on time. Everything was organized. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos.”

Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on November 2, 2018.
