DARK PHOENIX writer and director Simon Kinberg confirmed the film’s February 14, 2019 release date via Instagram on the same day shareholders voted for Disney’s future acquisition of multiple 21st Century Fox assets, including movie studio 20th Century Fox.
Ridiculous rumors from a message board and YouTuber began circling the net that DARK PHOENIX and THE NEW MUTANTS were being shelved, despite both films have reshoots scheduled. In fact, Kinberg’s film crew is currently constructing sets in Montreal and the bulk of the cast are expected to return in the next month or so to shoot new scenes.
There’s no official word on when the first trailer will drop online, but (theatrically) 20th Century Fox has THE DARKEST MINDS (August 3) and PREDATOR (September 14) as potential candidates, unless they hold off for Sony’s VENOM (October 5).
Disney’s merger is expected to be 100% sometime in the first half of 2019 and the studio (legally) cannot give orders until so. This could put THE NEW MUTANTS in an odd position, but word of mouth from test screenings is that the film features great acting and surprising character developments. Just speculating, but the worse case scenario could be a straight-to-streaming release instead of theatrical.
