Celebrating X-Men Films And Beyond

Composer Hans Zimmer on what convinced him to return to the superhero genre with DARK PHOENIX.

Why did legendary composer Hans Zimmer decide to create a score for director Simon Kinberg’s DARK PHOENIX film? The musician had previously went on record saying that he was done composing music for the superhero film genre. Thanks to Collider, we have an answer. The site sat down with the icon to discuss a variety of topics, one being 20th Century Fox’s upcoming X-Men film.

“I had lost my voice,” he said. “I didn’t have any new ideas. I don’t ever want to phone it in. I don’t ever want to not have an idea, and I just made some sort of stupid blanket statement and Ron Howard, who I really consider a man of great wisdom and [a] great friend, quietly said to me, ‘Y’know Hans, you should never say no. You should go, I’m waiting for [a] great story. Because the genre doesn’t matter, you want a great story.’ So Simon turned up in Montreal with the whole cast and crew and everybody for one of the shows, and we just had a chat about what he wanted to do. I did have an idea of something I always wanted to try and it just so happens that it seems to fit into that sort of a movie. I’m not telling you what it is, because I don’t know if it’s actually going to work [or not].”

Zimmer is known for his award-winning works on such films as Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Lion King, Inception, Gladiator and The Thin Red Line.

Dark Phoenix flies into theaters on June 7, 2019.
