Box Office: THE NEW MUTANTS thrills and conflicts audiences, opening at Number One.

20th Century Studios’ THE NEW MUTANTS from director Josh Boone earned $7 million from 2,412 domestic theaters, landing at number one in its first weekend at the box office! Just 62% of theaters are open in the USA due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Before the shutdown, original predictions had the film earning between $15-$25 million. All things considering, these are perfectly fine numbers given the situation the world is facing. Speaking of the world, international numbers for the young adult X-Men thriller are around $2.9 million, making it’s current total around $9.9 million. Again, we’re in a pandemic.

The New Mutants earned a terrifyingly low Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 31% (from 39 reviewers), and a more palatable, but still rotten, audience score of 53% (from 1,108 verified rating). Reviews and numbers don’t always reflect the quality of a film as it’s ultimately YOU who decides if it’s great, just good, meh, or bad. Unlike the usual climate where box office number drop significantly in the following weeks, there’s time for those numbers to go up as folks decide whether to go to the cinemas or wait for a home video release, which will hopefully come sooner than later.

Stay tuned to XMF every week for updated box office totals.
