Fans of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool were surprised when a piece of SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS concept art found its way online. Drawn by senior artist Andrew Kim, the artwork depicts everyone’s favorite ‘merc with a mouth’ fighting MCU villain Proxima Midnight in an underground ring.
This left many wondering if the Marvel Cinematic Universe actually had plans to debut the character in the 2021 hit film. Turns out, that wasn’t the case…
“Well, long story short, sorry to disappoint you but there was no involvement of Deadpool or Proxima in the early going,” said Kim to Chatter Box Film. “When I was designing the fight club, my PD mentioned to me that we could see other Marvel characters fighting in the ring when we first revealed the scene. Deadpool and Proxima was my idea to put in as I thought their dynamic fighting styles could be a perfect fit in the ring like that. (you know, they don’t fly…haha) And Deadpool’s red was a nice pop against the bluish background.”
Despite this revelation, it’s still a nice piece of artwork to enjoy, and has us asking What If…
Deadpool is rumored to make his MCU debut in this year’s DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS (May 6), even with unconvincing denial from Reynolds!
