Marvel Television has released a new spot for their upcoming Wonder Man show, which premieres January 27 with 8 episodes on Disney Plus. In it, we get our first look at star Yahya Abdul-Mateen in a comic-accurate costume for his title character, Simon Williams. Ben Kingsley, Demetrius Grosse, Lauren Glazier, and Byron Bowers fill out the cast.
Williams is a struggling actor who finds himself stepping into a legendary role of a superhero, both figuratively and literally. The show plays with the idea of art imitating life, as Simon is cast to play Wonder Man in a fictional reboot film, only to discover that he may actually have superpowers himself. Set against the backdrop of a Hollywood obsessed with remakes and franchises, the series is a clever meta-narrative that poke fun at the superhero genre itself, with Marvel turning the camera inward on its own universe.

Behind the camera, Wonder Man is co-created by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Andrew Guest, who served as a producer on Hawkeye. According to Marvel, Wonder Man is set to explore a “new flavor” of storytelling within the MCU.
